Japan Trove

About

Japan Trove decodes Japan for visitors and fans abroad — practical travel guides and honest shopping picks, written with real Japanese sources so you get the local answer, not the recycled tourist one.

What we do

There’s no shortage of Japan content online, but a lot of it is copied, out of date, or written by people who’ve never dug into the Japanese-language web. We do things differently: we read local blogs, reviews, forums, and official Japanese sources, then translate what actually works into clear, up-to-date English guides. If a rule changed, a price went up, or a “hidden gem” is now a tourist trap, we want our guides to reflect that.

Two things, done well

  • Traveling in Japan — itineraries, rail passes, eSIMs, IC cards, where to stay, seasonal timing, etiquette, and the practical stuff (luggage forwarding, tax-free shopping, budgeting) that makes a trip smoother. Start with our first-timer tips and 7-day itinerary.
  • Buying from Japan — skincare, snacks, stationery, whisky and sake, hobby and character goods, kitchenware, and exactly how to ship it home when you can’t carry it. A good place to begin is our buying-from-Japan guide and best gifts from Japan.

How we work

  • Sourced locally. We cross-check against Japanese-language sources rather than just rewriting other English blogs.
  • Kept current. Rules, prices, and seasons change in Japan — we update guides as things shift.
  • Honest picks. We recommend what we’d genuinely tell a friend, and we explain the trade-offs instead of hyping everything.
  • Clear on the catches. Voltage, region locks, tattoo rules, hidden fish stock in “vegetarian” dishes — we flag the gotchas most guides skip.

How we make money

Japan Trove is free to read. To keep it that way, some of our pages contain affiliate links — if you book a hotel or buy a product through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes what we recommend or where a link points. We may also display advertising. For the full details, see our affiliate disclosure and privacy policy.

Who we are

Japan Trove is an independent, reader-focused project run by a small team with a long-running interest in Japan and its media, and hands-on experience navigating the country and its shops. We’re not a big publisher or a travel agency — just people who love getting the details right and want to save you time and mistakes.
