Nagoya, Japan’s fourth-biggest city, is an underrated stop between Tokyo and Kyoto — home to a famous castle, distinctive local food, and great museums. Here’s what to do.
Top things to do

- Toyota Commemorative Museum & SCMaglev and Railway Park — excellent for industry and train fans.
- Atsuta Shrine — one of Japan’s most important shrines, set in a peaceful forest.
- Osu Shopping District — a lively arcade of vintage, street food, and quirky shops.
- Ghibli Park — the Studio Ghibli theme park is nearby (book well ahead).
Nagoya food (Nagoya meshi)
- Hitsumabushi — grilled eel over rice, eaten three ways.
- Miso katsu — pork cutlet with rich red-miso sauce.
- Tebasaki — sweet-spicy chicken wings. More in must-try food.
