Wondering what to pack and wear in Japan? The country spans seasons and situations — from temple visits to fancy dinners to lots of walking. Here’s a practical, season-by-season guide.
By season
- Spring (Mar–May): layers — mild days, cool mornings. A light jacket and a compact umbrella. Perfect for cherry blossom season.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): hot and very humid. Breathable clothes, a hat, and a hand towel; a light layer for strong air-con.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): gorgeous and mild — layers again, great for fall foliage.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): cold, especially up north — a warm coat, gloves, and heat packs; see Japan in winter.
Comfortable, respectful, practical
- Shoes you can slip off easily — you’ll remove them at temples, ryokan, and some restaurants. Nice socks help!
- Walk-friendly footwear — you’ll walk a lot; broken-in sneakers win.
- Modest options for temples and shrines; shoulders/knees covered is polite. See our etiquette guide.
Dressing up (and down)
- Japan skews neat and put-together; smart-casual covers most situations.
- High-end restaurants may expect tidy attire (no gym wear/flip-flops).
- Renting a kimono or yukata for a day is a fun experience.
Handy extras
- A compact umbrella, a foldable bag, and layers you can peel off.
- Tattoos? Some onsen have rules — see our tattoo & onsen guide.
- Full checklist in our packing list.
